Monday, we got as far as Tyler, Texas before running into more bad weather. So Tuesday we did laundry and cleaned our tiny house on wheels while waiting for yet another ice storm to pass. It also gave us time to consider our next move. We decided to just head west rather than spending more time in Texas because the cold and ice were heading south to San Antonio, which we had planned to visit next. We will be coming back through on the way home when the weather will likely be better. So yesterday, when the roads re-opened, we pointed ourselves toward Abilene, Midland, and Odessa.
Without a doubt, It's oil country. There were hundreds of RV parks along I20 with lots of residents--way too many to be vacationers. I suspect they are homes to some, but may be temporary homes for oil field and seasonal workers too. The landscape is a strange (to me) combination of scrubby desert, cotton fields, an occasional pecan orchard, and industrial equipment ranging from random discarded truck parts to oil wells to massive refineries. Here are some pics from the road.

Spent the day in Bill Clinton’s home town. My recommendations: breakfast at Granny's Kitchen, a visit to the warm mineral baths when it's freezing outside, the National Park Campground at Gulpha Gorge (full service for only $15/night), and a better picture of Hot Spring's favorite son. Bath House Row: Also, walked up all 306 steps (only because the elevators were not working) to get some pics for y'all from the Mountain Tower in the park. So here are views to the east and south from the TOP of the Mountain Tower. Note Winnie waiting patiently down below.
Headed to Nashville Thursday afternoon to avoid the winter storm due to arrive in Cbus on Friday. Not sure why we thought a winter storm in Tennessee would be easier to navigate than one in Ohio. Rookie mistake. About noon on Friday on our way to Memphis, we stopped at a truck stop because the roads were getting really bad. Turns out we got off a mile before a 16 truck and 8 car pile up on Route 40 that shut everything down for about 12 hours. http://whnt.com/2018/01/12/multiple-crashes-shut-down-portion-of-i-40-in-tennessee/. God was with us! We spent the last 24 hours here, with a whole lot of other people, safe and warm. We appreciate the shelter that was afforded us. Truck stop life is safe, warm, and entertaining 24 hours a day.
